News anchors - can they be "cleaned up"?

I've been pushing this idea around in my mind for a while.

My thinking is when a person takes a college course and a paper is to be written, it is expected that all grammar should be correct and will not include any slang or clichés.

Before anyone becomes a news anchor that person goes through school. It's probably the same process for people going into the media as in any other area, being that they get a degree. Anyway, since I don't know, my guess is that college is where people learn to talk like an anchor. People don't talk that way normally.

And so, back to my querry, "Can news anchors be 'cleaned up'?"

My answer is: why not?
